The Problem
The client had a product catalogue in a Word document designed for people to read, not systems to process. Loading it manually meant copying names, prices, and sizes one by one. Products with multiple size options were listed as separate rows rather than proper WooCommerce variable products, creating catalogue clutter and a poor frontend experience.
What I Built
- AI-assisted structured data extraction: product name, price, pack info, and notes separated into columns from unformatted brochure text, with missing prices flagged
- Price normalisation so WooCommerce treats all values as numbers — removing inconsistent currency symbols and whitespace from source data
- Size options converted into true WooCommerce variable products: one parent product with child size variations and a size selector dropdown
- Excel master file formatted to match WooCommerce’s import column structure — becomes the ongoing source of truth for future product updates
- CSV exported and imported using WooCommerce’s native product importer with correct attribute column mapping and variation row structure
- QA process: verified import counts, confirmed attribute and variation setup, and checked category assignment and visibility settings
Real Problems Solved
These are real issues that surfaced under real users and real hosting constraints.
- 55 source rows correctly resolved to 48 products and 11 variations — the reduction is correct and expected because variation rows consolidate under variable product parents. Documented this clearly for the client.
- Size-based products duplicated as separate catalogue entries were consolidated into clean variable products, eliminating near-duplicate listings.
